Often, minor damage on a windshield can be repaired using a specialized process that injects a clear, acrylic resin into the damage. The resin displaces air, and then cures and hardens in ultraviolet light to restore the original integrity and most of the original clarity at the repair site. This process takes roughly 30 minutes and can be done while you wait. As a bonus, rock chip repair is also covered 100% by most insurance companies without a deductible, meaning you won't have any out-of-pocket expenses associated with windshield repair.
Yes, windshield replacement does require an appointment. We stock many different windshields and get a daily delivery from our suppliers in Denver, so we can sometimes offer same-day service. Most often, we can make an appointment within 24 - 48 hours for broken windshields. We try and prioritize broken door glass and back glass. At any time, you can come by the shop and have the a temporary covering installed prior to your appointment.
On the day of your appointment, we'll ask that you drop off your car for about 3 - 4 hours. This will give us time to complete the installation, and allow the car to sit idle for a minimum 1 hour before the adhesive achieves a safe driveaway time.
Windshield replacement falls under the comprehensive portion of your insurance policy. Comprehensive insurance claims are also considered "no fault" claims which differ from collision claims. You are responsible to pay us your deductible amount, and the balance will be paid by your insurance carrier once a claim has been setup prior to your appointment. Some insurance companies offer separate glass coverage as an option when you purchase your policy. This option allows you to replace your windshield with little or no cost to you. We are happy to process the claim for you through your insurance carrier. Since all insurance companies handle claims differently, ask us how to get a claim setup and we'll take care of the rest.
Cracks & Racks does all of our work in our shop in the Aspen Business Center. We believe our high standard of windshield repair and replacement is better achieved by performing our work in a controlled environment. This is especially true during the winter months here in the Rocky Mountains where cold and moisture will negatively affect the windshield replacement process.
Sorry, but we do not currently offer pickup/drop off service in and out of Aspen. However, we can drop you off at the bus stop on Hwy. 82. RFTA service is available throughout the day, and is actually the fastest and easiest way back into Aspen with the new, dedicated bus lanes. Bus information can be found by calling RFTA at 970/925-8484. Taxi service is also available to anywhere in the Roaring Fork Valley by calling 970/925-TAXI (8294).

You can find the year of the vehicle in a few different places. On this inside of the driver's door jamb there should be a sticker or placard with the vehicle information. Usually, located on the top right corner of this sticker/placard is a mm/yy which indicates the date of manufacture. Also, your vehicle's registration and proof of insurance card will have the vehicle year listed on it. If you still need help finding the vehicle year, please contact the shop, or stop by.
Many vehicle models have different options that came from the factory as part of the vehicle's accessory package. Some features might include heated elements, rain sensors, ADAS, acoustic interlayers, heads up displays, and power/self-dimming rearview mirrors, for example. The VIN Number is used to decode these options so that we can be sure to have the right parts for your vehicle.
A rain sensor is a device that is attached to the windshield that is actuated by a sensor that detects when the windshield is wet, thereby turning on the wiper blades automatically. If your vehicle is equipped with a rain sensor, we'll want to know. The rain sensor is attached to the glass around the rearview mirror. In some cases, it has an irridescent blue or red color, or may look like like a trapezoidal shaped piece of hardware. If you're not sure, call the shop or come by - it wouldn't be the first time we showed a car owner how the rain sensor works.
Today's vehicles have complex systems designed for your safety. The most significant change in the AutoGlass industry is the incorporation of Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS). Also known as lane keep assist, or land departure warning, these features provide some sort of feedback to the driver when the vehicle senses that it is drifting outside of it's lane. OEM car manufacturers recommend that the camera systems be calibrated after the windshield is replaced. Most foreign vehicles require a static calibration that requires the vehicle to be brought onto a rack, and a computer re-focuses the lasers onto specific targets. Domestic vehicles can be calibrated using a dynamic system that is done while the vehicle is in motion. Currently, Cracks & Racks provides Dynamic Calibration for all domestic and some foreign makes of vehicles. Calibration is covered with your insurance claim and can be done while your vehicle is here for service.
Some windshields have a heated element that runs throughout the entire glass, while others have a "heated wiper park area" that has a heat element below the windshield wipers to prevent them from freezing to the car. Range Rovers have the heat throughout the glass, while many Subaru Outback and Forester models and Toyota Highlander and Sienna models have a "heated wiper park area". The "heated wiper park area" looks like an orange grid, similar to the back glass and is usually found on vehicles that have cold weather packages with heated seats. If you're unsure if your vehicle has a heated windshield, call the shop or stop by so we can take a look with you.
Tinting is the application of a light translucent color, from the manufacturer, to the entire windshield to reduce glare that occurs from sunlight. Though you may not see it, all windshields are tinted. Shading is the application of heavy translucent color to the top of the windshield that acts as an additional tint to help block the suns rays. Shading can come in several different colors including blue, green, gray, and bronze. Not every windshield has colored shading applied to the windshield from the factory. Although your vehicle may or may not have shading currently, the option to add or eliminate shading is often available.
This is usually a result of careless and unprofessional windshield installations in the past. When the installer removes the old glue during the windshield removal process they often scratch the pinch weld resulting in rust down the road. This is one good reason to think twice about that super-low price you might have been quoted from Denver.
If there is visible rust around the perimeter of the windshield, the chances are good that the rust is also UNDER the windshield - the critical adhesion, also know as the "pinch weld". Rust on the pinch weld must be removed completely and the metal must be treated with a special etch primer before a new windshield can be installed. These steps ensure proper bonding of the urethane (glue) to the windshield and the pinch weld. This procedure also helps prevent the spread of the rust.
Definitely. Cracks & Racks has been working on Range Rover, Audi, Lexus and other luxury cars for a long time. Our techs are well-trained, conscientious installers who take pride in their work. You can be confident that we'll take good care of your luxury vehicle and return it to its original state.
Yes, we can save the parking stickers and prefer you leave your oil change and parking stickers on the windshield for us to reapply. Our policy is to always replace any current oil change decals, parking stickers and membership stickers. In the rare event that we can't reapply the sticker in good condition, we'll return it to you so that you can take it to get replaced.
At this time we do not offer a scratch removal process for windshields. Scratch removal is a time consuming process that may lead to distortion of the glass or inconsistent planing.
No. Automotive glass is our specialty.
